1995-2015 - 20 Years: Classics, Unreleased And Remixes

DMX Krew

Instead of a conventional luxury box, the retrospective comes in packaging styled after classic Oberheim hardware: a wooden body with a transparent printed plastic cover. The reference is especially clever because DMX Krew takes its name from the Oberheim DMX drum machine, linking the artist, the hardware and record-shop culture in one physical object.

Time Capsule (Third 808 Box)

The whole set works like a physical TR-808 system. Eight 180g 12"s sit in a black wooden box screen-printed with the machine in gold, alongside a black-on-black T-shirt and a heavy card-stock poster split into eight 30 × 30 cm modules that assemble into a full 808. The bonus Der Zyklus 12" goes full nerd: marbled vinyl with a glow-in-the-dark silkscreened spiral galaxy. Limited to 200.

Luke Eargoggle / Faceless Mind

The double album is engineered more like hardware than packaging. Two white 12"s sit behind transparent Plexiglas and translucent printed layers, letting the materials interact as part of the artwork. Four exposed screws literally lock the assembly together and must be removed to reach the vinyl. Limited to 100 numbered copies, opening it feels less like handling a sleeve than servicing a piece of electronic gear.

Autechre

The packaging works like a modular system rather than a conventional album sleeve. Four heavyweight records sit in individual printed sleeves inside a rigid Cairn Eco Kraft slipcase, finished with subtle clear-foil printing. Its restrained, layered construction mirrors Autechre’s precise, abstract and highly structured music.

Four separate record sleeves become parts of a single object through a semi-transparent plastic box. The outer case contains the set without visually hiding it, so the individual components remain visible while still reading as one unified package. It is an unusually architectural approach to a vinyl box set, especially for 2002.

Escape From Synth City

The packaging turns the record into an oversized Nintendo Entertainment System game cartridge. A die-cut outer sleeve, game-style label and debossed cartridge details recreate the look and feel of an actual NES game. It is especially clever because the fictional retro game becomes the physical container for a collection of synth music imagining how the 1980s thought the future would sound.

New Order

The sleeve turns a 12-inch record into an oversized 5¼-inch floppy disk. Real die-cut holes reveal the silver inner sleeve, while the artist, titles and catalogue number are encoded as coloured blocks instead of normal text. It is clever because the packaging translates the song’s electronic, machine-made character into a physical data-storage object and even makes the listener decode the information.

June Mini

Kind Human Being

The format itself becomes the visual joke and the concept. Instead of a normal LP, the album is physically reduced to two 7-inch records and a tiny 5-inch record. Calling it a “Mini” release is therefore not just a title, the album has literally been miniaturised into vinyl form.
