Tres Hombres

"When ZZ Top comes on stage they introduce themselves as 'a little ole band from Texas' and then proceed to blow heads off with their high-powered brand of music." So went the tagline of a full-page ad for ZZ Top's third album, Tres Hombres, published in Billboard magazine on Aug. 11, 1973. It was truth in advertising: At the time, the blues-rock trio - vocalist-guitarist Billy Gibbons, bassist and vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard (credited here with the nickname "Rube") was storming across the U.S., converting fans left and right with a thunderous live show.

Tres Hombres had arrived in stores weeks before the Billboard ad. Alongside The Allman Brothers Band, whose breakthrough, Brothers and Sisters, arrived around the same time as Tres Hombres - ZZ Top also legitimized southern rock as a cultural and creative force.

In many ways, Tres Hombres laid the groundwork for ZZ Top's enduring success. Today, it's easy to draw a straight line from the sound of "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" to Queens of the Stone Age and any number of popular stoner metal bands. Artists that blur the lines between country, rock and blues - to name a few: Chris Stapleton, Gov't Mule, and Blackberry Smoke - can also turn to the album for inspiration. And in hard-rock circles, Tres Hombres was a blueprint for not just any number of southern rockers who followed, but also English barnburners Motorhead (who covered "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers) and Aussie hard-rock legends AC/DC. Tres Hombres helped push rock in new directions during the 1970s - and its formidable shadow looms large.
